We have an exciting opportunity within Rethink’s North East Prison Service where you will join our friendly and inspiring leadership team as a part time Senior Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner.


Your role will be a permanent position working part time, 18.75 hours per week and the likely location for the role is either in the Durham or Teesside areas, although this will be confirmed at interview.


As a service, we cover the following prisons; HMP Northumberland, HMP Durham, HMP Frankland, HMPYOI Low Newton, HMP Holme House, HMYOI Deerbolt and Derwentside Immigration Removal Centre so there may be occasions when you are asked to support provision in any of the above sites.  


You will work between Monday to Friday 08:00am -16:00pm, however some flexibility is required depending on service need. You will carry out your clinical work face to face. 


The Prisons and Criminal Justice Leadership team design, develop and deliver contracts in line with national IAPT guidance for those affected by Mental Health in Prisons and Criminal Justice Settings. As a Senior Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner you will help ensure the highest quality of care is provided, achieving positive outcomes for patients and stakeholders alike embodying our organisational values and behavioural framework, modelling best practice and striving for excellence.

What will you be doing?

You will be supporting someone in their daily activities and helping them lead a fulfilling life, this can involve things like,

  • Accept referrals via agreed protocols within the service.  Making decisions on suitability of new referrals, adhering to referral protocols, and refer unsuitable clients on to the relevant service or back to the referral agent as necessary; or steps-up the persons treatment to high intensity
  • Undertake person-centred interviews identifying areas where the person wishes to see change and or recovery and make an accurate assessment of risk to self and others
  • Provide assessment and Low intensity interventions e.g. psycho-educational interventions, Guided Self Help, drawing from CBT theories and techniques.
  • Produce reports on clients in a timely manner, that convey the key findings of the psychological intervention in a way that does justice to the complexity of the problems described, but that are understandable to the recipients of the reports, including clients and referrers
  • Provide clinical and management supervision, develop, support and supervise Trainee and Qualified  Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners and Health & Wellbeing Coaches
  • Collate monthly performance data for Head of Prisons & Criminal Justice Services

Do you have what we are looking for?

  • Successfully completed academic course of study in line with the IAPT Low Intensity National Programme and qualified as a PWP, e.g. Post Grad Diploma in Psychological Therapies
  • Experience of working in a supervisory role
  • Significant post-qualification experience in offering and delivering the full range of evidence-based IAPT low intensity interventions at Step 2
  • Proven ability to meet agreed/specified service targets and demonstrate clinical outcomes
  • Ability to develop good therapeutic relationships with clients and practice in a non-discriminatory manner, respecting the beliefs and cultural practices of individuals and groups
  • Knowledge of assessment procedures, screening, referral, record-keeping and evidence-based brief psychological interventions.
